Dr. O’Dell has spent his entire 34 year career in academic rehabilitation medicine (physiatry.) During that time, he has mentored hundreds of medical students, rehabilitation residents, fellows in rehabilitation and neurology, and faculty members. Many of his mentees have gone onto highly prestigious positions at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Cornell and Columbia, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and The Massachusetts General Hospital. In 2022, Dr. O'Dell was awarded with the Outstanding Mentorship Award by the Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine. He was one of the founders of the Program for Academic Leadership at the Association of Academic Physiatrists and was honored with both the Outstanding Commitment in 2012 and Service Award in 2019 by that organization for his work.

His clinical and research expertise in neurorehabilitation has garnered invitations to lecture on numerous topics extensively throughout the United States and Europe. His nearly 100 publications focus on the use botulinum toxins in the treatment of spasticity, the applications of technology in stroke rehabilitation and the psychometric properties of assessment scales used in the field. He has published in the most well-respected journals in the field such as The Lancet, Stroke, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair and the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. O’Dell has been involved in the design, implementation and analysis of dozens of research studies. He served as the national Principal Investigator on the FASTEST Trial examining the use of functional electrical stimulation for foot-drop after stroke from 2010-12.

Dr. O’Dell is available to lecture on several topics including motor recovery following stroke, post-stroke depression, management of spasticity following central neurological disease or injury, and mentorship in academic medicine, among others. Likewise, he is available for consultation by industry and academia for the design, analysis and interpretation of clinical trials and other research.
